Chapter 6 - Getting to Know Each Other
“Would you like to feed the birds? Just a dollar a bag.” She asked. You hesitated, but seeing how much money Gilbert gave you, you just shrugged and handed her a dollar. She happily handed over a bag of seeds to feed the birds, as you decided to ask something.
“Thank you… By chance, have you seen a prince around here?” You asked, not really expecting any help.
“He was here.” She answered, not looking up from the birds.
“Really?” You gave her a questioning look.
“Oh, yes.” She confirmed, looking up at you with a small smile.
“___? What are you doing?” Gilbert walked over, looking a bit irritated. You were a bit surprise at his arrival, but you assumed he was watching you go, until this lady stopped you.
“Gilbert, she was just helping me look for Roderich.” Gilbert glanced at her and back to you, with an unbelieving look.
“He was on the bus this morning. He tried to kill me!” She exclaimed.
“Great. Wonderful. Thank you.” Gilbert took your arm and dragged you away. You gave him a questioning look, as he sighed. “What are you thinking? You can't just give people money.”
“You gave me money.” You snapped back.
“That's not the point.” He countered.
“And she very helpful.” He sighed, looking away.
“So, what's the deal, this prince of yours? How long you two been together?” Gilbert asked, trying to change the subject.
“About a day.” You answered honestly.
“You mean it feels like a day, because you're so in love?” He looked to you for confirmation.
“No. It's been a day.” You repeated.
“You're kidding me. A day? One day?” Gilbert laughed a little, trying to make sense of this.
“Yes... And tomorrow will be two days.” You said, beginning to feel a bit embarrassed.
“You're joking.” He looked to you with a grin.
“No. I'm not.” You said with all seriousness.
“Yeah, you are.” He said, still not believing you.
“But I’m not.” You said, looking him straight in the eye. He stops walking and looks at you, his smile gone.
“You're gonna marry somebody after a day because you fell in love with him?” He asked, now serious.
“Yes!” He looked completely confused now, but you rolled your eyes and began to drag him along.

You both walked and talked for a bit. Nothing to big, he just told you a bit about him and Ludwig and you told him a bit about yourself. You were now eating a hotdog, trying not to drop it as you both walked.
“I don't get it. How can you talk about loving some guy you don't even know?” He asked.
“Well, I know what's in his heart.” You say, still trying to eat your hotdog.
“Oh, Okay. Great.” He mumbled, looking away and stuffing his hands in his pockets. You finished your hotdog and threw away the wrapper.
“That was great, I haven’t had normal food for a while.” You smiled a bit, rubbing your face to make you didn’t have anything on it. Finally, you looked back to him with a bright smile. “What about you? How long have you known your Elizabeta?”
“Uh, it’s been five years.” He answered sheepishly. He rubbed the back of his head, blushing a bit at the mention of her.
“And you haven't proposed?”
“Well, no. I-“
“Well, no wonder she's angry.” You joked, as he shot you a light glare. You were walking by a street vendor, when the owner stopped you.
“Hello, you want juicy, sweet caramel apple, maybe?” He asked, holding out a golden caramel apple. You looked him over feeling a sense of familiarity, but you shook it off, assuming it was nothing. “No charge for the beautiful young woman.”
“Really. It's free?” Gilbert asked, a bit surprised.
“Of course! Today is free caramel apple day. Tomorrow is free cinnamon… churros!” The man hurriedly answered.
“Thank you very much.” You smiled, taking the apple graciously.
“You're welcome, miss.” He smiled, as you walked off with Gilbert.
“Most normal people get to know each other before they get married. They date.” Gilbert said, continuing your conversation. You didn’t give a response and he looked to you. “You know, date. You go some place special. You know, like a restaurant, or a movie, a museum. Or you just hang out and you talk.”
“What do you talk about?” You asked.
“About each other. About yourself. About your interests. Your likes, your dislikes.” He smiles a bit. “You talk!”
“You have such strange ideas about love.” You joked, again, smiling. He scoffed and looked to you with a grin.
“Maybe we should do what you would do. You meet, have lunch, and get married.” He teased back.
“You forgot about happily ever after.” You added.
“Forget "happily ever after.” It doesn't exist.” It was your turn to look surprised. You threw away your apple, not having the appetite to eat it now.
“Well, of course it does.” You said, hoping he was joking.
“I hate to disagree, but marriages are a success if they manage not to end. Forget about happiness.” He sighed, looking down.
“What about you and Elizabeta? You know that you will live happily ever after.” he hesitated to this.
“I don't know if I'll make it through today, let alone a lifetime. That's what I'm trying to tell you. It's complicated.” He answered.
“But it doesn't have to be.” You tried to reassure him. “Not if she knows.”
“Knows what?” He looked to you now.
“How much you really love her.” You answered.
“Of course she does. We just don't talk about it every minute of the day, but she knows.” He answered, but he didn't seem completely sure about his answer.
“How?”
“What do you mean, “how?”" He asked, beginning to look confused, again.

~(f/n)'s POV~
Silently I sat upon the bed waiting for Peter.
'Sigh'.
Looking to a clock that I've somehow missed, I noticed that I've been here for about fifteen minutes.
Suddenly a voice was yelling “WHAT?!”… I guess that was one of the other residents that lived here and he had been just told of the near death situation.
Then, staring at the door, I heard someone stomping toward this room and then past it. I also heard some random objects being smashed in progress of this person's little running campaign. By all the racket sounding outside, I was kinda glad that I closed Peter's room door when I went in.
