Literature Text

You walked down the narrow, dirt trail, kicking stones occasionally. You had just left a Halloween party held by your British friend and lost track of time. You couldn’t help it. It was an awesome party, especially for the Brit.
You didn’t have a ride home, so you were forced to walk and so you decided to take a forest-filled path that you occasionally took home. But tonight it seemed to trouble you. Maybe it was because it’s Halloween and usually the night did make you a bit more superstitious. You tried to shrug it off as you continued to walk on.
Suddenly, the little sunlight you had, vanish from behind the trees, with only trickles of light illuminating through the cracks of the trees. But that’s not what concerned you. You saw dark clouds slowly moving towards the sun and by the drop of what fell on your face, you realized one thing. There was a storm coming. You began to quicken your pace through the forest, hoping to beat the weather home.
That’s when you heard it. A single strum of a violin. If hearing that instrument in the middle of a forest wasn’t strange enough, the sound of those three notes echoed through the forest. You waited a moment to see if you could hear it, again, but nothing came. You shook your head and slowly began to make your way, again.
Then it came again, repeating those same notes twice. This time it confirmed your suspicion of it being real and also in the direction it was coming from. The only problem now was… Should you go check it out? You mulled it over in your head, before hesitantly stepping off the trail.
The same three notes, repeated, came again, along with the sound of a brook. Whoever was playing this violin was near the river. You pushed some branches and brush aside as you now followed the sound of the small river. Suddenly, you burst out into an opening right in front of the river. What stood at the river surprised you though.
A man stood at the edge of the river, dressed in a navy colored shirt and a red buttoned-up vest along with black pants that reached his thighs. Strangely enough, he had strands of seaweed trailing through his platinum blonde hair, which had a strange floating curl next to it. But what really caught your eye was the snow white, emerald encrusted violin he settled on his shoulder. He hadn’t opened his eyes, but you felt like he knew you were there.
He played the three note tune, again and paused to listen to it echo through the woods. You were still a bit confused about him (noting his bare-feet), but even though you knew you should be worried about this strange man, you instead felt a soothing calm.
He then played the same rhythm, again, but added seven different notes to it, lifting them through the air. You took a cautious step forward, but the man remained unchanged. He repeated the new tune he just played once more, making the whole forest seem silent, besides him and the river the stood from behind. But what happened next surprised you.
“Summon wind. Blind the sun, rain draws near, it has begun. Let us dance outside nature roars tonight. We want wind, we want clouds, we want thunder roaring loud. Hear our music, Song of Storms.” He sang, his voice as smooth as the brook behind him, but as loud as the thunder that shook the ground around you. A slight wind tugged at your shirt, as the moon began to be your light. But something strange occurred to you. You suddenly felt the need to approach this man, to follow him.
So, with hesitant, slow steps, you walked towards him. The wind continued to pick up, as thunder rang, again, some lighting flashing through the sky.
“Blowing wind, bring a sound that will tremble through the ground. Dancing in the cold, ancient storm of old. Let the wind blow away all our troubles, dance ‘til day. Hear our music, Song of Storms.” The man took a step back into the river and slowly began to make his way up-stream, all the while playing a tune of his own. You then began to take off your own shoes, not really thinking of what you’re doing. You took your own step into the river and felt a sharp chill shake through your body, but after a couple seconds you became used to the cold and continued to pursue the man. While following the man, the more he played the more you seemed to have a skip in your step. Honestly, you just let his beautiful music overwhelm you.
He hopped up onto a rock that weighed out of the river and gracefully began to skip to each one, you following in every step. After several minutes, that felt likes seconds, of wading through the river and jumping on the stones, you both appeared at the end of the river for you two. As in, a waterfall. He stepped up onto a large flat platform that rose above the water and turned to face you, his eyes still closed. He quickly began to play his violin and an unknown force took over you.
If you had any common sense at the moment, you would have run, but common sense was drowning in his music right now. So, with swift feet, you hopped up onto his platform and steadily rising in pace, you began to dance around him. You spun and skipped, and all you could around him as his tempo began to rise again and again. Finally, when your feet began to ache, he slowed down the tempo and steadily came to a pause. He stood for a moment, his hands at the ready to play any tune at his own whim, but instead, he slowly set the instrument to the ground.
You didn’t have time to react at his next actions. With not opening a single eye, he took your hand into his own and gently placed his hand on your waist. He then began to lead you in a waltz. You placed your hand on his shoulder and did your best to keep up with his quick, but smooth steps. But suddenly your worry washed away, again as his violin music seemed to reappear.
He wasn’t playing though, but the music just seemed to run through your head. You supposed that it ran through his veins. So, he continued to waltz with you to the invisible music that played through your head, occasionally spinning and dipping you here and there. Every movement was exact and precise, and honestly, it felt like you were walking on water.
His hold on you was sturdy, but gentle and his steps were swift and soft. Everything you seemed to lack in dance seemed to be lifted off your shoulders as he led you. His cool touch and safe embrace brought complete peace to you. Rain progressively began to fall around you, as thunder echoed to the beat of the song. You danced until the soles of your feet were raw and bleeding.
He then lifted you off your feet, by the waist and twirled you around, before setting you in the water. The numbness quickly embraced you, sealing away your pain, as he stepped in with you. He began to lead the waltz in the icy running water, as his music increasingly became louder in your head. Finally, after what had felt like an eternity of dancing, he slowed the pace for the last time.
“Violent wind carries on dancing until we are one. Dancing while it drops, ‘til the music stops.” He softly sang he slowed the pace of his waltz down. Finally, he completely stopped in place. His hand that held yours trailed down a little and held your wrist. His other on your waist, trailed up your side leaving goose-bumps and gently held your elbow. He slowly opened his eyes, revealing a glowing dark blue. His straight face, slowly curved-up into a small, tender smile.
“Gentle wind, be our friend stay with us until the end. Hear our fare well, Song of Storms.” He then plunged you into the water, drowning out the music and your life.
